Directions: From Hwy 16 turn south on Mountain Street by the Husky station. Follow Mountain Street up the hill and turn right onto Collinge Road at the top of the Hill. Park in the town parking lot on the north side of Collinge Road and walk down to Maxwell Lake. We will meet at the picnic table by the lake and proceed from there. Hinton's new and exciting Beaver Boardwalk was opened June 2007 and additions in the winters of 2008 and 2009 make this one of the best places to observe beavers, birds and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The boardwalk leads visitors through a marsh, to a beaver pond, along Happy Creek and to the edge of Maxwell Lake. The boardwalk boasts an outdoor classroom, interpretive signage, and two viewing towers with spectacular views of the mountains. This event will be hosted by members of the Whisky-jack Club who have produced a Bird list of the Maxwell Lake and Beaver Boardwalk area. The bike ride will be followed by a barbeque featuring locally produced, organic beef burgers by Diamond Willow Ranchers. Supporting locally produced food promotes clean air by reducing the greenhouse gases emitted by transporting that food to our tables. The barbeque is free for riders. All that is needed to join is a bike and helmet. Safety vests for the ride will be provided. People must register by calling 403-320-4996. Bring in paints, solvents, oils, old drugs etc, and we will dispose of them safely. We will also provide information on the City's Hazmat dropoff site. Monday - Hazardous waste Drop off - College personnel can bring in their paints, solvents, oils, old drugs etc, and we will dispose of them safely. We will also provide information on the City's Hazmat dropoff site. Tuesday - Solid Waste stream reduction - We will collect all of the trash from the college from the previous day and deposit it outside the front entrance in a roped off area approx 10 meters from the front doors. It will be signed showing that this is a typical College daily garbage output and what this adds up to in a year. All students and staff will be encouraged to come visit the "pile" and bring any recyclable materials along and deposit in "green" collection hoppers. Posters on "green" hoppers will encourage us to "DO MORE!". We will also provide information on what can and cannot be recycled. At the end of the day we will show how much solid waste was diverted from the landfill in just one day. Wednesday - Commuter Challenge - Staff will be encouraged to find alternate means than driving to work this week. A vehicle counter will be placed at the entrances to the College so that we can track our traffic. We will also be setting up a voluntary "Toll Booth" for those who do drive that day. There will be a sign up sheet to see how far people walked/biked that day. Again more info available on bus routes, Green house gas emissions, etc. Thursday - Cathy Linowski will be hosting a free lunch time seminar on Xeriscaping and low impact gardening. Guided Tours of the Campus will be available throughout the day. Friday - Eat Locally (100 mile diet) There will be a mini-farmers market display at the college from 11:30am to 1:30pm. Rachel MacPherson from MacPherson Meats willalso make a 15-20 minute presentation on the benefits of buying local, naturally raised beef. There will also be presentations on the 100 mile diet concept. There will be a BBQ offering burgers from MacPherson Meats, locally baked buns, and fresh vegetables from local greenhouses for a toonie. A comprehensive list of Local Producers put together by the Community Food Connections group will be available. Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation: The BCBC is located in Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park, approximately 18.5 km north of Slave Lake, AB on Highway 88. This event will start in the classroom teaching kids about riparian areas, what they are and then what they do, followed by looking at factors affecting water quality and some different types of aquatic bugs. The presentation will then head outside to the local lake where we will do some water quality sampling, look at how what we do in one area to our steam affects all other areas and finally end the day with some pond dipping.
