Get in the Loop: Kit

Get in the Loop was developed in partnership with a variety of organizations with waste-related interests. It raises awareness about different types of waste, such as organics that can be composted and hazardous wastes that require special handling; it explores what Alberta is doing to manage household waste, tires, electronics, used oil, beverage containers and more.
Kit contains: The poster (2 copies), the Teacher's Guide, a set of Poster Back Copy Sheets and a black and white miniposter. Pieces also available online.

Get in the Loop: Poster

The poster depicts people taking responsibility for waste management at an individual, business and community level. It also shows a number of provincial programs in place to manage items such as used tires, electronics, beverage containers and used oil, filters and containers. Two copies of the full-colour poster, Get in the Loop, come with the kit. Educators may order up to six additional posters separately, to allow students to work around it in small groups. Posters measure 36" tall x 24" wide.

Get in the Loop: Teacher's Guide

Eleven activities in the 24-page booklet address the 12 SLE's outlined in Alberta Education's grade four science curriculum on waste. It contains copy sheets, a listing of resources for further study and answers to activities on the back of the Get in the Loop poster. Download and print a copy here, or order a hard copy as part of the poster kit (see Get in the Loop Poster Kit).

Get in the Loop: Miniposter

The "miniposter" is an 8-½" x 11" black and white copy of the poster that students could keep at their desk for individual reference. Instructions on the back help guide the teacher to use the large full-colour and mini-poster in the classroom. Download and print a copy here, or order as part of the poster kit (see Get in the Loop Poster Kit).

Get in the Loop: Puzzle Pieces

The copy sheets are black and white puzzle pieces of the poster front. The poster front is available online only as a set of 28 black and white 8-½" x 11" panels numbered for easy reference that can be downloaded and printed. Photocopy them and have students trim the excess white border, colour them and then piece together to form a mural that is four sheets across by seven sheets deep. Be sure to check this website in a couple of months for information about each individual panel and how to incorporate these puzzle pieces into your classroom lessons on waste. Note: Not included in poster kit.

The Solar Village Documentary and Teacher's Guide

The Solar Village is a documentary video that explores how we can create sustainable communities. Rather than discuss these workable ideas in the abstract this documentary takes you to the people who are making the modern world work on solar power today. Beyond renewable energy the people of Freiburg Germany show us how to build large scale solar apartment houses, privately financed wind parks, and zero emissions factories (that can even produce solar panels). In this documentary you will meet the people, planners and politicians who are making it happen. The documentary video is available for free through the website. A new teacher's guide has been added to the website and is also available for download.
