Minister for the Day

The MFTD program has undergone a theme renewal, to focus on Alberta Environment’s priorities of water and energy conservation and waste reduction through education and action. The lessons for the program are from the One Simple Act Schools Toolkit, and support Grade 5 science and social studies curriculum. The classroom component to Minister for the Day also includes a student booklet that aligns with the lessons and activities completed in a classroom or outdoor setting.

Through the lessons and associated booklet, students are required to apply their learning about air, water, land and waste, and related conservation actions. They are also asked to provide their ideas on their environmental priorities if they were to be Minister of Environment for the Day, and how they might motivate Albertans to change their behavior and become better stewards of Alberta’s environment. Completed booklets are sent to Alberta Environment for judging and 12 students and their teachers are then selected and invited to participate in an event in Edmonton. During the day in Edmonton, students learn more about governing the environment and personal stewardship, as well as have the opportunity to share their concerns and ideas with Alberta Environment staff. They also typically participate in a briefing, a tour of the Legislature including the Minister’s Office, and a media event with the Minister.

“When I see this kind of excitement generated by Minister for the Day and the enriched learning taking place, the rewards are highly motivated students who have become critical and creative thinkers.” - Teacher

“I think it is important for the students to involve themselves in opportunities like this. I believe that they become more aware of their 'lives' or involvement in other things when they are asked to write about it and think 'outside the box'. They were amazed at all the ways that they help, or are involved, in environmental issues at their age level.” - Teacher
