FAQ-Land-Pipelines

Who regulates pipeline activity in Alberta?

Matters dealing with pipelines in Alberta are a shared responsibility. Pipelines are regulated by Alberta Environment under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and the Water Act, by Sustainable Resource Development under the Public Lands Act, and by the Energy Resources Conservation Board under the Pipeline Act. Involvement of other government departments and agencies will depend on the context and region. For example, pipelines that cross provincial or national boundaries are regulated by the National Energy Board.

Where can I find information on pipeline guidelines and standards?

For more information on pipelines contact Alberta Environment's Information Centre at 780-427-2700 (toll free, dial 310-0000) or the Energy Resources Conservation Board at 403-297-8311. Copies of the Acts and regulations are available through the Queen's Printer.
