FAQ-Storage Tanks

Matters of above and below ground storage tanks are a shared responsibility in Alberta. Factors such as tank location, jurisdictional region, and the nature and volume of the store substance will determine which Government body or agency is responsible for the regulation and operation of that storage tank.

What are the regulations regarding underground and above ground storage tanks?

Alberta Environment regulates those holding a permit under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA). An approval under EPEA is required if more than 5000 L of liquid fertilizer or chemical is being stored, or if more than 10,000 L of petroleum products is being stored.

The Petroleum Tank Management Association of Alberta (PTMAA) regulates the use and disposal of above and below ground storage tanks not regulated by Alberta Environment described above. All tanks, whether above ground or below ground, are required to be registered with the PTMAA.

For other considerations please note that, Municipal Affairs is responsible for safety issues and there are regulations in the Alberta Fire Code which also apply. The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) also has regulations that apply for oil and gas sites.

For more information contact the Petroleum Tank Management Association of Alberta (PTMAA). In Edmonton - 425-8265; Toll Free - 1-866-222-8265. Search the Alberta Environment Information Centre publications for the “above ground secondary containment guide” for more information.
