FAQ-Waste-Appliances

Appliances such as fridges and stoves (sometimes referred to as “white goods”) some small appliances, and other miscellaneous items (metal furnishings, fasteners and fittings) can be recycled because they are a valuable source of valuable metal.

Where do we recycle white goods and other metal items?

This depends on the local community. Sometimes it is collected at the landfill, sometimes (like Edmonton) it’s a special depot, and sometimes certain materials can be brought directly to metal recyclers in town. Contact your local municipality to find out what the options are in your area. To find municipal contact information visit Alberta Municipal Affairs and search the Municipal Profiles.

Where do we recycle small appliances?

Some communities collect and recycle small appliances while others do not. Check with your municipality to see what is locally recyclable. If your community does recycle small appliances, they often collect these materials at the landfill or a special recycling depot (e.g. the City of Edmonton collects small appliances at their Ecostations). To find municipal contact information visit Alberta Municipal Affairs and search the Municipal Profiles.

What happens to recycled appliances?

Appliances along with other miscellaneous scrap metal items are transformed into steel, using only one-quarter of the energy it takes to make it from its primary resource, iron ore.
