2004 Acid Deposition Assessment for Alberta: A report of the Acid Deposition Assessment Group

Alberta Environment adopted the Acid Deposition Management Framework developed by the Clean Air Strategic Alliance for management of acid deposition effects in Alberta. The framework was described in the report: Application of Critical, Target, and Monitoring Loads for Evaluation and Management of Acid Deposition (AENV, 1999). The framework prescribes a 5-year assessment cycle.

Air Monitoring Report: Shell Chemicals Scotford Complex Emergency Response

On Monday, March 14, 2005 at approximately 9:45am, a release occurred from a ruptured storage vessel at the Shell Chemicals Scotford site, northeast of Edmonton. The release consisted of a mixture of styrene and ethylbenzene, which escaped from a storage tank and resulted in a vapour release that moved offsite3. Alberta Environment’s mobile lab was deployed to the Scotford site and arrived shortly after 12:00pm; monitoring began at 12:25pm. The MAML was not designed or equipped for emergency response monitoring, however, it can be used in a limited capacity to provide such support during upset conditions.

Air Our Invisible Connection

This kit for Grades 7-9 illustrates natural and human activities that affect air quality, outlines how air data is gathered, shared, and why it is important. The kit contains two posters, a teacher’s guide, and a 20 minute video on CD. If you prefer visit http://www.fortair.org/.html to download a copy of the poster and teacher’s guide.

Air Pollutant and Deposition Monitoring Networks in Alberta: A Review and Recommendations for Potential Future Networks

Alberta Environment commissioned Dr. John Neil Cape from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology at the Edinburgh Research Station in the United Kingdom (UK) to conduct a review of current air and deposition monitoring in Alberta and provided recommendations for future network development. The review was conducted to support the development of a new Air Monitoring Strategic Plan for Alberta, and considered factors such as existing air monitoring in Alberta and future air emission scenarios.

Air Quality in Alberta April to June 2001

Alberta Environmental Protection continuously monitors air quality in Edmonton (3 stations), Calgary (3 stations), Fort Saskatchewan and Fort MacKay. Air quality parameters monitored at Alberta Environmental Protection stations include carbon monoxide, dust and smoke (the coefficient of haze), oxides of nitrogen, ozone, total hydrocarbons, hydrogen sulphide, sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia and particulates (PM10 and PM2.5). The Index of the Quality of the Air (IQUA) is calculated at the Edmonton, Calgary and Fort Saskatchewan stations. The IQUA converts air parameter concentrations into Good, Fair, Poor and Very Poor air quality ratings.
