Capture and Storage of Carbon Dioxide in Western Canada

Alberta’s response to climate change – Albertans & Climate Change: Taking Action – is designed to encourage Albertans to take steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity and energy consumption, and begin to adapt to potential changes in climate. Taking Action is an integrated and innovative plan in which the capture and storage of carbon dioxide underground plays a key role. In relation to this, the Alberta government and stakeholders are working together on a Canadian carbon storage network of excellence; Alberta Energy has a $15 million royalty credit program for carbon dioxide injection projects and Alberta Environment and the Alberta Energy Research Institute are involved in a $25 million monitoring and evaluation project on the long-term reliability of storing carbon dioxide in geological formations.
