Pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other known or suspected endocrine disrupting compounds
(EDCs) have been widely detected in various waters throughout the world. Prior to this study,
however, sampling for these substances was rather limited within Alberta. In 2002 and 2003,
due to concerns about potential impacts on humans, livestock, aquatic organisms, and wildlife,
Alberta Environment collected wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents and receiving river
water from numerous locations throughout the Province and analysed them for a broad range of
organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs). This initial survey, encompassing an assortment of
pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, steroids, surfactants, and plasticizers, was designed to determine
which compounds are released by WWTPs in Alberta and to assess their presence in receiving
river waters.

This report assembles data and information regarding conditions in the receiving river system, concentrations and loads in effluents and tributaries to the Wapiti River. It reviews pertinent reports and information from
elsewhere to guide the City of Grande Prairie as they move forward with improvements to their sewage treatment.

This guideline has been developed by Alberta Environmental Protection because of the reality that all liners will leak to some extent and because of the resultant history of groundwater
contamination at some sites. This guideline focuses on double lined ponds with a primary liner consisting of a geomembrane liner, a secondary liner (normally consisting of a geomembrane
liner or a clay liner), and a leak detection/collection system in between the two liners, by ensuring
that the liner leakage is minimal and that it is controlled.

These guidelines are a general reference for wastewater management at new and existing coal mining operations. Alberta Environmental Protection's expectations for the collection, treatment and disposal of mine wastewaters are described. Relevant sections of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) that must be followed by coal mine operators are outlined.
These guidelines describe the types of mine wastewaters generated and how they should be managed. Included are guidelines pertaining to settling pond design requirements, the use of wastewater treatment chemicals, and general comments on areas of wastewater management that require particular attention. Typical EPEA approval requirements for mine wastewater release limits, monitoring, and reporting are discussed.
